Pack 366 Volunteers 2017-2018
Who runs the Pack?
We all do. We are all volunteers. Scouting is an organization that encourages family participation. Parents are involved in various ways.
- Directly with your child.
- Helping your child's den.
- Helping the pack.
- Helping with an event.
Why help?
- Many hands make a light load. Nobody is overworked.
- When everybody chips in, we can have a better program.
- Quality time with your child and his friends.
- Satisfaction from serving.
Help your child
- If you are a Lion (K) or Tiger (1) we need an “adult partner” to attend meetings with your child. You will be participating in the meetings, assisting your child and getting to know people. One parent is officially registered as the partner along with the Scout on the youth application, but either parent, grandparent, relative etc. is welcome to participate at any time.
Help your Den
- Especially for new dens and Lions and Tigers, one parent will need to become the Den Leader. That person will coordinate meeting times, line up parent instructors and facilitate things. You will be the main connection between the pack and den. We can also have an assistant den leader share the administrative responsibilities.
- If you are not the den leader, you will still be asked to lead or help with one or more den meetings throughout the year.
- Generally, you should show up ready to jump in and informally help the leaders even if you have not been asked to prepare anything.
2 Deep Leadership
For the older age groups, parents don’t have to stay for every Den meeting but we encourage you to stay as much as you can. Scouting has the concept of 2 deep leadership which means at minimum a registered leader and at least one other adult need to be present at all times. Plan on sticking around and informally helping and this won’t become something that has to be scheduled.
Pack Positions
The pack has a minimal list of official positions that have to be filled to continue to exist:
- Cubmaster – the leader of the pack, facilitates pack meetings, etc.
- Committee Chair – Works with the adults, gets positions filled, etc.
- Den Leaders – Planning and facilitation for one Den.
- Charter Representative – The connection to the chartered organization.
- Committee Member(s) – Officially participate in planning and decision making process for the pack.
More Pack Positions
- Assistant Cubmaster
- Assistant Den Leaders
- Training Coordinator
- Recruiting Coordinator
- Popcorn Kernel
- Advancement Chair
- TroopTrack Administrator
- Treasurer
Registered Leaders
The people who fill these roles are registered leaders. That means you fill out an application with Scouts BSA. They ask for some references and a background check. You also MUST do clearances (like the school district) and complete a Youth Protection online training course. You will also need to complete some position specific online training.
Clearances and Youth Protection
All parents are encouraged to do the clearances and youth protection training even if you are not a registered leader. It is good for everyone to understand the program. There may be cases where an event comes up (like day camp) and you will have to do it to participate. It will be easier to have done it ahead of time.
Event Committees:
- Ideally a parent from the responsible den (not the den leader) serves as the overall event leader.
- We form an event committee.
- Other parents from the responsible den play a big part.
- Parents from older dens should help and pass down knowledge.
- Parents from younger dens should help and get some exposure for future years.
Events and Responsible Dens:
- Lion - Scouting for Food
- Tiger - USC Community Day
- Wolf - Spring Campout
- Bears - Pinewood Derby
- Webelos - Blue and Gold Banquet
- Arrow of Light - Fall Camp Out. (AOL needs requirements and to get ready for Scouts BSA.)
- Pack Committee - Pool Party, Spring Campfire

How we get volunteers:
- Please fill out the Survey at the beginning of the year.
- Add your name to sign up lists at any pack meeting.
- Talk with, call or email the pack committee chair or any registered leader anytime.
- Respond to an emailed call for help.
Please let us know so we can have a tentative list for a topic area. Closer to the time of the event, we will check in to see if you are still available and to get your thoughts on how you are able to help.
